History
Background
The modern period in Telugu literature, which began in the late 19th century was dominated by several illustrious literary magazines like Krishna Patrika, Bharathi, Aandhri etc., which provided a platform for writers and poets, and served as journals by publishing researched articles. They essentially catered to the classical style in poetry. However, towards the end of the 20 th century almost all the journals/magazines which catered to traditional style in poetry ceased publication. At the same time, interest and support for traditional literature, poetry in classical metrical style declined. Almost the entire print media barring a few magazines gave importance to literary forms like, broken verse, short story, and novel. There was then a felt need for journals / magazines that encouraged and provided a platform for poetry in the classical style. During the late eighties Shri Kondepudy Subba Rao started a movement known as “Andhra Padya Kavita Sadassu” to revitalise the literary world and refocus their interest in the classical style of poetry.
1. Registration of the Journal
Registration of the journal by the Registrar of News Papers for India was necessary. In 1996-97, a proposal was sent to the Registrar with Sri Kondepudy Subba Rao and Sri Vasanta Rao Venkata Rao as the joint editors. Several names were suggested for the quarterly journal. Approval was granted with the name ‘Prasanna Bharathi’ on the 27th of May 1998, and the registration number given was 52917/94.
The correspondence took some time, and Sri Vasanta Rao Venkata Rao passed away when approval was granted. Another difficulty arose as the journal had already been published as “Prasanna Bharathi.” Therefore, Sri Kondepudy Subba Rao was called upon to function as the sole editor, and the volume/issue numbers continued from 1993. The journal continues the same sequence by adopting a financial year as its standard.
Thus, the April issue was the first, the July issue was the second, the October issue was the third, and the January issue became the fourth in each financial year.
2. Prasanna Bharathi Journal Started in 1993
Sri Subba Rao left Andhra Padya Kavita Sadassu and devoted his energies to starting a literary journal named Prasanna Bharathi in October 1993. By then, even “Bharathi,”, started by Kasinadhuni Nageswara Rao, ceased publication.
Intellectuals and literary luminaries of Visakhapatnam supported the idea of starting a Telugu literary journal, which gave a prominent place to classical traditions in poetry and literature. Kala Prapurna Charla Ganapati Sastry, Acharya Divakarla Rama Murthy, Acharya Vasantha Rao Venkata Rao, Kala Prapurna Ganapati Raju Achyuta Rama Raju, Sahaja Kavi Sahini Lakshmipati Rao and a couple of practicing journalists endorsed the idea of starting a literary magazine.
The objectives of the journal, as approved by the above group, are :
- All the different forms of literature must be accommodated, story, poetry, criticism, etc
- Shista Vyavaharika bhasha in prose is accepted.
- Poetry must be in classical metrical style with prosody and grammatically accepted diction.
- The journal must comply with financial accounting standards.
- Articles must be apolitical without invectiveness or vulgarity
3. Over the years
Sri Kondepudy Subba Rao continued as editor of the journal till January 2011, when he passed away. An Editorial Board comprising eminent literary personalities was constituted in January 2011, and the Trust is continuing the publication of the journal with Sri Kondepudy Sarveswar Prasad as the editor of the journal and secretary of the Prasanna Bharathi Trust. Prasanna
Bharathi journal has been published as a printed version all these years. Of late,, the journal is also being sent to readers by WhatsApp and mail. The journal has been added to the list of journals in the Telugu language under UGC care.
